Cisco 4000 Series

The Cisco 4000 Series routers are the leading modular midrange/regional routers in the industry. The modular interfaces supported include Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Token Ring, ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI), ISDN Primary Rate Interface (PRI), serial and channelized T1/E1, async, ATM, Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI), and High-Speed Serial Interface (HSSI). The full suite of high-speed LAN support (Fast Ethernet, FDDI, ATM) provides the investment protection necessary for a platform that can grow with the increased local bandwidth generated from multimedia applications and the migration from a shared to a switched environment. Their high-performance RISC CPUs make the Cisco 4500-M and 4700-M excellent choices for supporting software functionality that is either calculation intensive or process switched. This performance, in conjunction with high-density synchronous and asynchronous serial interfaces, makes the Cisco 4000 Series a particularly good it for integrating legacy equipment and protocols such as SNA into a robust, end-to-end IP network.

Cisco 4500-M
  • Full suite of high-speed media (Fast Ethernet, FDDI, ATM, HSSI)
  • Calculation-intensive or process-switched Cisco IOS Software features such as encryption and compression, certain IBM protocols, protocol translation, and X.25 switching
  • High-density LAN connectivity (up to 12 Ethernet ports, or 6 Token Ring ports, or a combination thereof)
  • Legacy environments requiring high-density synchronous and asynchronous serial support
  • Cisco 4700-M 30–50 percent higher performance for future growth, multiple high-speed interfaces, or configurations with multiple Cisco IOS security, QoS, and accounting features enabled
  • 64-MB main memory for large Internet route tables

Key Features
  • Supports a full suite of Cisco IOS Software feature sets; customers can cost-effectively choose from a rich set of protocols (IP, Internetwork Packet Exchange [IPX], AppleTalk, DEC, VINES, and so on), QoS, security, redundancy and WAN optimization, and management and accounting features supported by the Cisco IOS Software
  • High-performance RISC architecture to support high-speed media (Fast Ethernet, ATM, FDDI, HSSI) and calculation/process switching-intensive features
  • Optional redundant power system for very high reliability
